June Monthly Research Meeting

Filed under: Interesting Information, Monthly Meetings — Kathie Otto @ 2:41 am

The research group will meet this coming Tuesday, July 6, between 10 and 12 in the Pillsbury meeting room on Level A of the History Center.

Deb will bring an list of some large collections that are being transferred to 1500 Mississippi Street because there is too much weight on some of the storage areas at the History Center. These collections will continue to be available, but you’ll need to request your box(es) some days in advance of when they will be delivered to the library.

The job announcement for the new MHS Director and Chief Executive Officer is now posted on the MHS website. If the link doesn’t work, go to www.mnhs.org, click on “About” and then, on the right, “Job Openings.”

At next month’s meeting, on August 3, Jane Wong will join us to bring us up to date on how Minnesota newspapers are being acquired in digital formats.

June 2009 Monthly Meeting

This will remind you that the MHS monthly research group meets tomorrow morning, Tuesday, June 2, at 10 am. We meet in the Pillsbury Room on Level A of the History Center. The email function for the Researchers Notebook blog is not working and it’s not clear when it may be fixed, so for now we’re back to plain old emailing.

I’ll be bringing a couple of requests for source suggestions from scholars in Kansas and Oklahoma, one on the housing crisis and mortgage laws in Minneapolis during the 1930s Depression and the other on more-than-basic information on female captives in the Dakota War and afterwards.

Kathie and Debbie look forward to seeing those of you who can attend tomorrow’s meeting and hearing your research reports. Please let us know if you’d like your name removed from the reminder list.

May Researchers Meeting

We will gather for the monthly research meeting this coming Tuesday, May 5, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  We’ll be meeting in a new place that we hope will be a little roomier, the Pillsbury conference room on Level A of the History Center.  Here are some directions, and if you don’t remember them, just ask at the MHS Information Desk on the first floor when you enter the building from the parking lot.

As you enter the History Center from the parking lot, come straight down the hall, past both stores, and turn left when you can’t go much farther.  You’ll be at a set of 2 elevators.  Take an elevator down 1 floor to Level A.  Straight ahead of you when you get off at Level A will be the Pillsbury Conference Room.

We look forward to hearing about your current and planned research projects.

If you can’t make the meeting but would like to send a message to the group (raise a question, ask for research help, make an anouncement, or offer a suggestion), let Kathie know. We can even post your message on the blog, if you want, and you can receive “virtual” answers! If you really want to get into blogging, we can make you a “contributor” and you can post messages yourself.

Please let Kathie know if you would like to remove your name from the monthly reminder list.

P.S. Deb is recovering well, but will not be with us for the meeting.

March 2009 Monthly Meeting

We will gather for the monthly research meeting this coming Tuesday, March 3, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Knight Research Suite in the Publications Department’s office area. We look forward to hearing about your current and planned research projects.

Lea Vander Velde’s new book, Mrs. Dred Scott: A Life on Slavery’s Frontier, is out and the MHS library has just received a copy.

The MHS Collections Management Dept. has begun working toward integrating all of the library’s WPA materials into one large online record.  They’re using a technique called block-building, where various people are assigned different pieces of a project and the cataloging is added for each piece when it is finished.  The same technique is being used for cataloging the Hill Papers and the Mondale Papers.  No delayed gratification here!

If you can’t make the meeting but would like to send a message to the group (raise a question, ask for research help, make an anouncement, or offer a suggestion), let Debbie or Kathie know. We can even post your message on the blog, if you want, and you can receive “virtual” answers!
