David Grabitske

David Grabitske is the manager of outreach services at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Minnesota.

I would like to find out what other organizations use for registration and scheduling software for large school events.

Thanks,

We rock it old-school, Cheryl. We use a desk calendar to track school tours, noting time, age or grade, size of group, and contact info directly on the calendar on the date of the tour. We’re small enough that a technological solution would be overkill.

We don’t have special software. We get a fair number of school tours at four different sites, but have never felt like we needed a software tracking system. Frankly I can’t imagine a scenario where we would get anything like that.

Cheryl – I just spoke to Melissa Peterson, who works at the Lindbergh House Site. She, too, is attempting to figure out a way to track scheduling using a software solution. She’s been trying to come up with something using Excel, but not having much luck.

As I was investigating Joomla!, an open-source content management system for websites, I noted that among its many extensions (program add-ons) there are several for booking & reservations. While I have no idea what technology is behind your website, if you’re using a content management system, maybe it has some sort of booking & reservations extension that you can easily adopt.

Here’s the Joomla! booking & reservations extensions page, in case you’re curious: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/vertical-markets/booking-&-reservation
