Ojibwe Jacket

Monday, October 10th, 2016

A deerskin jacket purchased by the staff of Camp Kamaji at Cass Lake, Minnesota, from a local Ojibwe craftsperson, likely Leech Lake Band. The coat is decorated with appliqu├ęs of cut glass beads sewn to bands of leather that are edged with cotton cloth; the back yoke is constructed in a similar manner. Probably from the 1930s.

WPA Bowl

A carved and painted decorative wood bowl with a polychrome floral motif. The artist’s signature “KRISTOF SLANINA” is painted in block letters near the rim. Handwritten on base is “W.P.A. HANDICRAFT / DIST 3 NO 11″. This is one of two similar bowls found at the Riverview Public Library in the West Side neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
