Trench Knife

A United States Army Model 1918 trench knife features a brass knuckle handle with individual finger loops and a double-edged dagger blade. Knives like this were used during World War I for close fighting in trenches.

Dorothy Hill Dress

A dinner dress of ashes of roses silk taffeta and white tulle, embellished with ribbons of lace bows, cording, gauging, ruching and silver threads. Designed by Lady Duff Gordon (Lucile, Ltd). The designer named her dresses each season. This dress was named “Happiness” and was designed in fall of 1916. It was owned by Dorothy Hill, daughter-in-law of James J. Hill.

Chinese Restaurant Sign

An ornate sign with three black Chinese characters in relief surrounded by carved gilded designs of birds, flowers, etc. on a gilded ground. The characters translate as “YUEN FAUNG LO” or “The Cafe of Many Different Vistas”. The sign was carved in Canton, China, and hung in John’s Place, one of the first Chinese restaurants in Minneapolis. Circa 1914.

U.S.S. Maumee Pennant

Dark blue and gold felt pennant of the U.S.S. Maumee (AO-2), which was commissioned in 1916 and refueled destroyers at sea during World War I. The pennant reads “U S N [United States Navy] / U.S.S. MAUMEE”.
