Wow! I and my boyfriend were fishing on a creek bank. After a few hours and a few fish. They had stopped biting. So we started to leave. We took a path through the woods where the rain had washed through the woods. I looked down and there was the tin. I picked it up, brought it home, and Google got me here. Cool beans!

This would not have been used to sterilize instruments, at least not during the Civil War. The Germ Theory didn't come about until 1874 - AFTER the war. Civil War surgeons did not know the importance of sterilizing their instruments. Alcohol burners could be used to heat instruments for cauterizing wounds though.

Man on the left is Lucius Trautman
The man on the right of the General is Ray Trautman
The Minneapolis Artificial Limb Co.
410 Portland Ave.
Mpls., MN

The man handing the artificial limb to the general may be Albert Wenger. He lost all four limbs to frostbite when in High school in Wisconsin.

I was a Trim Twist Girl store demonstrator! It was my first job in high school "no experience necessary" in the summer of 1968. I twisted for about 4 hours at a time next to the cosmetics department at J.C. Penney. $1.60 an hour and 10¢ for every one I sold. I am looking for one because I remember how well they worked. I can recite the whole spiel on demand!

This was very interesting to view. My great-grandfather Hugh Rowlands and Speed's mother Jane were brother and sister. Hugh's obituary even mentioned Speed as his nephew. A number of old and fragile photos of Speed are in our family photo albums. Maybe some are from his flights to Milwaukee, WI as family lived in nearby Hartford in those days - though I am not sure I could match the biplane specified in his flight logs to the biplane in the pictures. It was great to find this site.

Hello Joan Kramer-Tanck:

I'm trying to locate an online image for Mr. Kramer's painting of the Linscheid family farm near Butterfield, MN. The B&W copy in "We Did Take Root: A Brief Saga of the Migrations to the New World by Galician Forebearers"
is not very good.

Did the painting survive? Tina

With regard to the portrait inquiry, we have no knowledge of the whereabouts of Paul's work other than what is in MHS collection.

With regard to the exhibition dates of Other Realities: The Work of Paul Kramer, I'm pleased to confirm those dates as June 29 - October 13, 2013. That exhibition will take place at the James J. Hill House Gallery on Summit Avenue.

It was exciting to read your letter from Charles Goddard to his mother. I also have letters from my great grandfather to his family at home from various locations while serving in the Civil War. I have a collect of letters and memorabilia from the Civil War on view to the public at the Prospect House and Civil War Museum. Check out our website www.prospecthousemuseum.org and I would enjoy hearing more from you and about your family.

The State Archives collection of the Minnesota Historical Society preserves several Fergus Falls State Hospital records that may answer your specific questions.
There are two sets of records that may interest you.

See this URL for an inventory of Fergus Falls State Hospital staff records, dated 1891-1998. http://www.mnhs.org/library/findaids/ffsh009.pdf.

Also, there is a set of personnel service records, dated 1925-1940, of the Division of Public Institutions.
Here is a summary of the records. Physical Details 4.0 cu. ft. (4 boxes). Records documenting various state personnel, particularly those at the state’s public institutions. The majority are personnel service record cards (1925-1939) for the state’s institutions, listing employee name, address, position, salary, brief statement of duties, data on previous state service, education, training, and personal and family information. Also State Employees Retirement Association deduction cards (1929-1939) and payroll deduction records on State Relief Agency and State Emergency Relief Administration paid employees (1939-1940).

I recommend you check the Library’s on-line research service for state hospital records available at: http://shop.mnhs.org/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=2474.

Also, you may contact the Society’s Library staff at 651.259.3300 or reference@mnhs.org for further assistance.

Good luck with you research!

I am trying to find information regarding my Grandfather Arthur Brostrom. He was born on Nov 26, 1891 and died Nov 15, 1967. My grandparents divorced in 1947, so that he would have to stay in the hospital. We have no information on why he was there and if he actually died there. Is there anybody that can help me with some information regarding him.

Thank you!

We lived in a glorious apartment on the third floor of the Administration Building, in 1966. Doctor Patterson, the Hospital Chief, lived on the second floor.
My husband was an MD, who was between the Military and a Psychiatry Residency; there was a terrific Psychiatrist who was working at the State Hospital, and John went to work there to work under him, Ralph Hirschowitz. Dr. Hirschowitz began the CTC at the Hospital, the Community Treatment Center. I don't have any history of what happened after we-and he-left.
We had three small children in this extraordinary setting. They used to have rocking chair races in the great hall.
It was a great adventure.
My attention was caught by yesterday's (January 12) article in the Minneapolis Tribune.

Thanks for the tweak! You're right, it's not quite that large as that(can you imagine?). We are fixing it now.
The Legislative Reference Library lists him as Abram, so we're going with that.

Thanks again for your help, we appreciate it!

Thanks for picking Fridley's namesake!

One tweak: The size of the image can't really be 4 1/4' height by 3 1/4' width, as listed at http://collections.mnhs.org/cms/display.php?irn=10061838 (Double quote marks for inches?)

Also I'm wondering about Abram vs. Abraham ... assuming it's the same guy.

Yes! Click on it twice, please. The first click makes it very small, the second makes it nice and readable.
I try to remind people that they can do this every couple weeks or so - sorry you missed that!
Thanks for your interest!

I have this stove in my house. In fact I have a fire roaring in it right now. Though mine says 1908 on the side. Whether is is 104 years old or 88, it sure it one hell of a stove.

The photos are part of the State Archives Collection, so it would have to be located within that collection, pulled, and scanned. Here is the URL for the on-line inventory: http://www.mnhs.org/library/findaids/ffsh016.pdf
You could come use the Collection here at the Library (see here for hours: http://sites.mnhs.org/library/)to see the higher quality image for yourself or use Reference Services available here: http://sites.mnhs.org/library/researchservices.
Hope this helps! Thanks for your interest.

Is it possible to get a higher resolution copy of the two images of the ladies that worked in the Fergus Falls Hospital laundry above? I am trying to identify a relative in that picture and having some difficulty since it is so very low resolution.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hello,
I am wondering if you have any portraits that Mr. Kramer has done sometime in the early 70s. My mother was one of his subjects and my parents own a head-shot painting he did of my mom. We know there is at least one other painting of my mother out there, probably painted in 1971. She is of half-mexican ancestry and is pregnant (with me). I would be very happy if someone at MNHS knows of or could confirm you have this image on hand. I would love to see it.
Cheers,
Rena

What a great podcast. As a retired history teacher and volunteer firefighter, my dad would have enjoyed watching the video posted here and being at the ceremony last Sunday on the grounds of the state capital. Unfortunately, my dad died a week before the dedication ceremony for the Fallen Firefighters Memorial, and his funeral was the day this podcast was filed. He loved the fire department and he would have loved to have seen the new installation of the memorial. Thank you for posting this video. And thank you to all the firefighters and first responders out there who put their lives on the line for us all every day.

S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald 37 Year Anniversary
November 10, 2011
RIVER ROUGE — A memorial service is planned for Saturday November 10, 2012 to remember the 29 men who died when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975.
The ceremony is set for 6 to 8 p.m. and the heated tent open at 4:30 p.m. for viewing Edmund Fitzgerald artifacts, near the Mariners Memorial Lighthouse at Belanger Park, off Belanger Park Drive and Marion.
The event is held in River Rouge because that’s the city where the vessel was built in 1957 and ’58.
Several speakers will give their memories of the ship, including people who helped construct it and relatives of some of the deceased crewmen.
Artifacts, photographs and videos also will be on display and you can talk to the Fitz Ship Builders, past Crew Members and Fitz Family Members.
At 7:10 p.m. — the time the ship sank — a wreath will be tossed into the Detroit River. A bell will be rung 29 times in memory of each person who died.
A plaque presentation and lantern lighting is planned. Food and Refreshments will be provided free of charge.
Event organizer Roscoe Clark has a Web site devoted to the vessel, which contains several video clips and photos of the ship.
Earlier in the day, an Edmund Fitzgerald open house will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at the River Rouge Historical Museum, 10750 W. Jefferson Ave.
This year, the service will be web cast free of charge for those viewers all across the US and Canada.
For more information and location call Roscoe Clark at (810) 519-2148.
This is a special program held each year and is free of charge. All new this year.

I consulted with permission folks in the Library, and we don't think display in a classroom as an exhibit needs formal permission. Generally, we don't issue permission for published items anyway. It shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for checking!

Lori,
As I look at the licensing agreement, it does not appear that any particular language relates to the public display in a college classroom, University of Minnesota, Crookston, MN. I just didn't want to get sideways with the copyright police. Please advise

Lorne My great great grandfather James Lowery/Lowry also served on the Minnesota and was at the second battle of Ft. Fisher. He was a boy 1st. class 15 years old. I have found info. where he saved a Confederate Soldier and years later while buying lumber to build boats he was talking to the landowner about the War turns out the landowner was the same soldier he saved years before. If you have any information on the Minnesota I would appreciate your help. Thanks Jim Lowery

Hi. What is the title of the book, please? Our interest likely would depend on the topic, not just that it was owned by him.
Please let me know either here or by emailing me directly: lori.williamson@mnhs.org
Thank you for thinking of us; we appreciate it!

I have just discovered a book belonging to H. C. Simpson with a very similar signature which is dated 1888 I believe it was a book given out by state office holders here in Pennsylvania. Are you interested in this?

Here are some of the resources about Fort Fisher we have in the Library Collection:
http://mnhs.mnpals.net/F?func=find-b&find_code=WRD&request=fort+fisher&local_base=&adjacent=N
If you need more than that I recommend contacting our Reference Department directly:

I am a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Camp 04. My great-great-great-grandfather Seaman David Bass, earned the Medal of Honor while serving aboard the USS Minnesota. I am putting together a presentation about him and would like a large portion be about the ship. I am looking for the "official version" of the 2nd battle of Fort Fisher. Assistance would be deeply appreciated.

the description doesn't mention that the "rosette" (technically a "boss") is attached upside down. Is the one on the other side also upside down?
