Sibley Sword

A non-regulation staff and field officer’s presentation sword and scabbard. The set was presented to Brigadier General Henry H. Sibley, who served as Minnesota’s first Governor, commander of the Minnesota Military District during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and leader of a punitive expedition into Dakota Territory in the spring of 1863. The scabbard is engraved, “Presented / to / Brig. / Gen. H. H. Sibley / by / the officers of his staff / May 18, 1863.” See also a photograph of Sibley holding this sword, ID Number por 7052 r3.
