Morrison Collage

On this day, April 17 in 2000 the Native American painter and sculptor George Morrison died. He was born in 1919 in Chippewa City and would garner national acclaim for his abstract and nature based work.

This sculpture or collage made in 1975 is one of many works by Morrison in the collection of the Minnesota Historical Society. It is a large work made of driftwood pieced together to form a landscape with a strong horizon line that would appear in nearly all of Morrison’s pieces made after the 1960s.

MNHS will also be hosting a traveling George Morrison exhibit titled Modern Spirit: The Art of George Morrison from February 14 to April 26, 2015.
