WPA Chest
Stencil painted and stained wooden chest with two hinged lids. Floral paintings at top corners of each side panel consist of stenciled green leaves and blue flowers with yellow centers. There are also stencil paintings of floral/filigree at each lid outside corner as well as two identical stencil paintings in blues, greens and yellows on front and back. These consist of two couples, in folk costume, dancing between flowers. Negative space is used in each to imply shape. Made for the Works Progress Administration / Federal Art Project St. Paul Handicraft Project, circa 1935 – 1942.
