Diary entry by Thomas Montgomery of the 7th Minnesota Regiment, Company K, written from St. Louis, Missouri – February 22, 1864

Montgomery was born in Ireland and by 1856 had moved with his family through Canada to settle in LeSeur County, Minnesota. When the war began, Thomas joined a local militia and then enlisted with the 7th Minnesota in 1862.

Weather beautiful and warm.
Lieut More officer of Police.
Made out a requisition for 30 pairs of sewed shoes, and drew them from the R. Q. M. and issued some to the men. Drilling with and without arms, Dan Keeling taken to Hospital. Lewis Wancedier Geo[rge] Floyd returned for duty
Lieut More went out to the city and bought valise, sash, straps, hat and shoes.
Dress parade at 5 PM with colors. Numerous Spectators from the City.
Attended officers school at Reg Hd. Qrs. Samuel Jackson gave me $100 for safe keeping for his family at interest[.]

Diary entries by Matthew Marvin – February 21, 1864

Diary entries by Matthew Marvin, Corporal in the 1st Minnesota Regiment who was wounded at Gettysburg. Marvin is convalescing at the United States Marine Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He has been receiving several letters recently, and on February 21 he writes: “Wrote L.G. & TJT & Rhoda[.] Weather pleasant[.] His wound continues to cause him pain and the heaters in his ward of the hospital had been malfunctioning, causing even more unpleasant conditions. On February 23 he describes a general inspection and explains, “he asked wat is the matter & went to the next & sckiped [skipped] some[…] I guess I allow that it is very unpleasant to lay all nite & listen to the moaning of a comrade in misery as was the case last nite”.
