Dear Libby:
Today has been very warm.  Have been over to the 43rd Ill., and had some good Lemonade with Capt. Arasinius.  Have to go on picket to-morrow for two days and nights […]
Out on Picket, June 25th.  Am on Picket five miles from Camp and two miles out from Hayne’s Bluff

The heaviest firing I have ever heard has been going on since 4 o’clock this afternoon.  The signal for it was given by rockets.  Grant now has 500 guns bearing on the rebel works – the greatest array of cannon ever in any siege or battle on this continent.
[June 26th]
[…] The firing yesterday was our assault on the main rebel work by Gen. Loga[n's] division.  The works were blown up by mines and one side of the fort carried and held by our men.  Gen. Sherman with Smiths division of the 16th Corps. and several divisions from the different corps before Vicksburg is now out toward Mechanicsburg to confront Johnson.  All the troops here have to keep in readiness to march at a moments warning.
[…]
Ever your affectionate
Madison
