Gov. Ramsey
Dear Sir   Permit me to address you a letter for the first time I expect you are interrupted often with such addresses, I have an exe to grind, I have three sons in the army   Wm H. H. Dooley enlisted in the first Regiment Company A at the commencement of the war, He was taken prisoner at the first battle of Bull Run after killing 10 or 11 Rebels he was in prison near 6 months and suffered much when he left home he weighed 169 lbs. when he was released from prison he weighed 113 lbs. he is about 23 years old his habits are very good he is temperate and Religious, has a good education and well informed.
After being 3 weeks in the service he was home on furlough and drilled the Home guards at Jordan his proficiency in the drill surprised all present he has been in many hard fought Battles many think he has killed his share of Rebels and done his share of fighting, he is only a corporal or serjeant with the partiality of a parent. I think he deserves promotion, you could not oblige me more than to give him a commission of any grade. I would prefer it in some new Regt. Here as the Southern climate does not agree with him I understand Capt Walters has tendered his Resignation of Com. 8th Regt. Will there not be a vacancy there I believe it would suit the company he is acquainted with nearly all of the company.

With his experience I think he could give general satisfaction I heard Col. Miller tell you when I saw you cast that many from the ranks of the Minnesota first would make first rate officers for these regts. The thought he should were he authorized detail some for that purpose please write at your earliest convenience and let me know what you think of my request, I have used my influence for you thought it for the interest of our country to do so and expect to do so again.

With which I subscribe myself your well wishing friend
Saml Dooley
