Nickel-plated, cased magnetic compass used by Arnold Eric Sevareid on a 1930 canoe expedition from Fort Snelling to the Hudson Bay.  The trip was the basis for Sevareid’s book Canoeing with the Cree.  The glass-covered compass has a needle swinging on a free pivot that points to magnetic north.
