U.S. Army cavalry bit

United States Army Model 1863 tinned iron bit with curved shanks and a size 4 port (the curb chain is missing).  The bit has a brass “US” bit boss riveted to each end of the mouth, a broken shank support, and fragments of leather reins attached to the rein rings. The right side bit boss is attached upside down; the left is right side up.

the description doesn’t mention that the “rosette” (technically a “boss”) is attached upside down. Is the one on the other side also upside down?

Lizzie Ehrenhalt reply on September 11th, 2012:

    Dear Jim,

Thank you for your comment. The rosette on the side of the bit not pictured is attached right side up. The post and the catalog record it links to have been edited to include this fact, and to use the word \boss.\
