Bernard Arnest - Red Barn

Red Barn
Bernard Arnest
Oil on masonite
ca. 1949

Bernard Arnest worked and taught in Minneapolis for a decade, beginning in 1947. He first served as an instructor at the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and then as an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. During his time in Minnesota, Bernard painted murals at the Veterans Service Building on the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul, and at the First National Bank of Southdale, Minnesota.  Red Barn, the abstracted farm scene shown here, was completed circa 1949 and must surely be an image of rural Minnesota in the late fall or early winter.
