Brigadier general's document case

Document case used during the Civil War by Lewis A. Grant, Colonel of the 5th Vermont Infantry.  Grant was later appointed brigadier general of volunteers and eventually served as Assistant U.S. Secretary of War under President Benjamin Harrison.  The tinned iron case has a friction fit cap and has been japanned a blackish red.  It is lettered in gold with the words,  “Commission of / Lewis A. Grant / Brigadier General / of Volunteers.”
