Letter from Matthew Marvin, Private in the 1st Minnesota Regiment, to his brother George from Camp Stone, Virginia, regarding camp life.

“Dear Brother I recd a letter from Jim Satterday and have not had a chance to answer untill now, So I will kill 2 birds with one stone or when I get through writing I will kill 2 secessh [secessionists] with one bullet if I can.  It is about 100 yards across There is fireing going on most all the while; a few minets ago their was a gun fired rite across here at the picket below me. I went down to the watter but could not see him.  I came back and gave my gun to one of the men with orders to shoot the first one he saw on the other side.  [...]“

Railroad bell

Cast-iron railroad bell with clapper manufactured circa 1890-1900. The bell is bolted to both a brace and a stand with uprights. It is rung by means of the rope handle on its side.

Hubert H. Humphrey lunch box

Lunch box created to demonstrate support for Hubert H. Humphrey’s 1968 presidential campaign.  The metal box has green velvet applique on its base, handle and interior.  Paper cut-outs, newsprint images of the candidate, and a color poster of Muriel Humphrey are affixed to its sides.
