Clara Gardner Mairs, painter and printmaker, was born in Hastings Minnesota in 1878. After studying at the St. Paul Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Académie Julian in Paris, Mairs established herself as an artist in St. Paul. Nothing is inherently unusual about the subject matter of the etching Cow Farm, as rural scenes were common during this period of prevalent American Regionalism. Her style of casual line and use of shifting perspective, however, is quite personal and distinct.
